The City of Sac City has been awarded a $75,000 grant through the Resources Enhancement and Protection (REAP) program to transform blighted land along the Raccoon River. The six-acre land parcel, located north of the old grain elevator, has been serving as an undesignated dumping area for used tires and other unwanted items, creating a hazard to the safety and well-being of the land. The city will use the REAP grant to remove the tires, debris, and other pollutants, restoring the ecology by replanting native plants and providing a habitat for pollinators, birds, and other species. In addition to improving the environment by eliminating hazards, the project will expand the city’s nature trail system to offer residents and visitors more opportunities for outdoor recreation, education, and community building. Sac City officials are committed to long-term sustainability and believe this project will have a lasting positive impact on the community. With the grant funding approved, city officials expect the Sac City trail expansion to be completed by the end of 2025.
