The Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Board of Education chose not to accept the resignation of previous middle school principal Scot Aden, meaning he cannot get out of his contract. Aden approached Superintendent Dr. Casey Berlau right before Thanksgiving, giving his resignation and asking to be let out of his contract for personal reasons related to leaving the education field. Aden’s last day in the district was Dec. 16. Berlau read from board policy 492 regarding the resignation of a contracted employee.
Aside from the circumstances, Aden could only be released from his contract if a suitable replacement was found. Berlau says that right now, Director of Student Services Crystal Boes will be serving in both roles for the remainder of the school year.
Berlau says the board members could take two directions on this resignation.
The Board of Education voted unanimously not to accept Aden’s resignation, meaning his contract is still in order. Aden will now have to agree to terms set by the district regarding paying off his contract, which may include paying for advertisement for a new middle school principal. If Aden does not fulfill the conditions set, the district will take legal action in small claims court. Berlau is also required to file a complaint with the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners for the break in the contract, which could lead to Aden’s administrative and teaching license being pulled. Board members wanted to thank Boes for stepping up during this time of need to continue assisting the district.
