A Coon Rapids man was one of three people killed in a head-on collision on Interstate 35 in northern Iowa yesterday (Saturday) morning. According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crash occurred in Worth County at approximately 8:55 a.m. near the 204 mile marker. Authorities say 41-year-old Bradley Vonnahme of Coon Rapids was traveling northbound on the interstate in a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado when a southbound Volkswagen Eos, operated by 83-year-old Leonard Lilyholm of Palm Beach, Fla., crossed the median into the northbound lanes and crashed into the pickup truck. Vonnahme, Lilyholm, and Lilyholm’s passenger, 82-year-old Carol Lilyholm of Palm Beach, Fla., died as a result of the injuries sustained in the collision. Three other injuries were reported, including to six-year-old Brookes Vonnahme of Coon Rapids, 26-year-old Saul Huntley-Ayala of Ames, and 24-year-old Victor Santos of Ames. Vonnahme, Huntley-Ayala, and Santos were all transported to the MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City with serious injuries. The Forest City Ambulance Service, Northwood First Responders, Worth County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa Department of Transportation, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, and the Fertile and Hanlontown Fire Department all assisted the Iowa State Patrol at the scene. An investigation into the collision is ongoing.
