Flags in Iowa have been ordered to half-staff for the next four weeks to honor former President Jimmy Carter following his death over the weekend at the age of 100. Gov. Kim Reynolds issued the order in conjunction with a proclamation from President Joe Biden for flags to be lowered immediately until sunset on Tuesday, Jan. 28. Reynolds says, “President Carter lived a great life marked by service to his country. Volunteering his time to build homes for those in need well into his 90s, President Carter never stopped living his faith through service. His belief in putting God’s love into action has inspired generations of Americans, and Kevin and I are praying for his family during this difficult time.” In accordance with the order, flags will be at half-staff on the State Capitol Building, in flag displays at the Capitol Complex, and all public buildings, grounds, and facilities throughout the state. Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties, and other governmental subdivisions are encouraged to fly their flags at half-staff for the duration of the order as a sign of respect. Carter served as the 39th President of the Unites States from 1977 to 1981. Thursday, Jan. 9, the date of Carter’s funeral, has been designated as a National Day of Mourning.
