NHTSA Reminds Iowans To Prepare For Winter Driving Conditions

Following Iowa’s first significant snowfall events of the season earlier this week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is reminding drivers to prepare their vehicles for winter weather. Regional Administrator Susan DeCourcy says, “We see so many crashes and stranded vehicles every time we get winter weather. Most of these unfortunate incidents could have been avoided with just a little vehicle preparation and slowing down.” To get your car winter-ready, NHTSA recommends checking tire tread and pressure monthly, ensuring windshield wipers are functional, and verifying battery strength. Drivers should also avoid bulky clothing on children in car seats, as it can compromise harness effectiveness. Slowing down during winter driving is critical on the road. Since 2022, an estimated 153,620 crashes have occurred in snowy or icy conditions. Drivers are also reminded to avoid snowplows, move over for emergency vehicles, and always wear seat belts.
