State officials announced Tuesday that the federal government has approved Iowa’s plan to extend postpartum Medicaid coverage for new mothers from 60 days to 12 months. Gov. Kim Reynolds praised the move, calling it a vital step for Iowans’ maternal health. She says, “Last year, I was proud to sign this bipartisan bill which expands postpartum coverage for thousands of new Iowa mothers. Maternal health care remains a central focus for me and my team. I will continue to fight for life and provide families with the support they need to raise their children and build strong, thriving families.” The extended coverage applies to families at or below 215 percent of the federal poverty level. While the extension was set to begin this month, delays in federal approval have pushed back the start date. Officials will announce a new timeline soon. Iowa joins 46 other states in expanding postpartum Medicaid benefits.
