Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) officially resumed his role as chairman of the Judiciary Committee on Tuesday after the U.S. Senate unanimously passed an organizing resolution appointing committee leaders for the 119th Congress. Grassley says, “As Chairman, I’m tasked with defending the Constitution, our nation’s most cherished document, and upholding the strength and independence of the federal judiciary. The Judiciary Committee will play a major role in securing our border and restoring the rule of law. It’s a serious responsibility, and I’m eager to get to work.” Grassley previously chaired the committee from 2015 to 2019 and indicated that the committee’s focus in this congress will be on border security, restoring the rule of law, and overseeing key judicial and executive nominations. Among the committee’s first priorities will be a hearing for former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi’s nomination as U.S. attorney general. The Judiciary Committee oversees the Department of Justice and its agencies, including the FBI, and reviews judicial nominations. Its legislative jurisdiction extends to immigration, crime, civil liberties, and beyond. In addition to chairing the Judiciary Committee, Grassley will continue serving on the Finance, Agriculture, and Budget Committees.
