The City of Audubon will be looking to rebuild the city police force instead of establishing an agreement with the county sheriff’s office for services. Audubon city council and city officials were exploring the option of merging the two law enforcement agencies after resignations with the Audubon Police Department brought the previously multiple officer team down to one full time officer and no chief of police. Audubon Mayor Palle Lansman says city officials are looking at the best option to provide protection and services to the town, while best utilizing city resources.

Lansman says to get a better understanding of the most efficient plans to operate a city force, research was completed comparing Audubon’s previous police force with similar size towns across Iowa.

Audubon city council approved at a special meeting on Jan. 3 of Sean Stapes to serve as interim chief of police and to raise full time officer wages between $30 to $37 per hour based on experience. Lansman says this initiative is to hopefully attract and retain quality officers to work and stay employed with the City of Audubon.
