The Carroll County Jail earned glowing reviews from inspectors earlier this month. In a letter to the county from the state’s Chief Jail Inspector, Delbert Longley, says his Jan. 14 examination, which included reviews of staff training records, required documentation, and prisoner file maintenance, found no significant issues of non-compliance. Longley writes, “Carroll County Jail is a newer, clean, well-managed, and well-maintained facility.” The jail, which opened in February of 2022, is nearing its third full year of operations since its construction. Longley’s only recommendation was for updates to the jail staff’s policy and procedures for prisoner fee collections, and those changes were made almost immediately after they were identified. Longley thanked Carroll County Sheriff Ken Pingrey, Chief Deputy Jon Cretsinger, Jail Supervisor Patti Mendenhall, and the county’s staff for their preparedness and assistance throughout the inspection. Prior to the new jail’s completion, Carroll County’s old facility was routinely cited for safety and prisoner categorization concerns due to the jail’s age.
