With Iowa’s High Cancer Rates, Iowa Cancer Registry And Other Organizations Partnering Together To Provide County By County Data

There are approximately 5,000 individuals in the seven-county region living with cancer, representing 6.3 percent of the total population in the area in 2023. With Iowa ranking the second highest and fastest growing rate of new cancers in the country, health officials and legislators are urging for answers to explain the reasoning behind the results, launching the Cancer in Iowa: 99 Counties Project in collaboration with numerous partners to present county-specific information and enhance cancer education. According to data from the National Cancer Institute (NIH), Carroll County ranks 86th in the state for new cancer cases, with Calhoun County ranking the highest at 47th, with 496.5 cases per 100,000 population, and Audubon ranking 94th with 438.8 cases. When it comes to cancer mortality rates, Greene County ranks number five in the state with a 186.8 death rate per 100,000 population across all types of cancer, and is the highest in the region. There approximately 1,220 individuals in Carroll County diagnosed with cancer, with 135 new cases reported last year in 2024, according to the Iowa Cancer Registry’s 2024 Cancer in Iowa Report. Melanoma and Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma being the top type of cancer in diagnosed in Carroll County.
