Following the Iowa Legislature’s third week in session, District 12 Rep. Craig Williams (R-Manning) highlighted key legislative activities, including discussions on school choice, election integrity, and rural childcare challenges. Williams met with Gov. Kim Reynolds on Wednesday to celebrate School Choice Week, reaffirming his support for open enrollment, homeschooling, and private education. He says, “My support for school choice has never been a secret, and I know not everyone agrees. But when it comes to education, I side with the kids, whether that’s open enrollment, homeschooling, or private education. Every student deserves a chance to thrive and achieve their dreams!” Williams notes over 43,000 Iowa students open enrolled in 2024. He also addressed concerns about Thomas Rest Haven nursing home in Coon Rapids and its plan to build a daycare center in Coon Rapids, emphasizing its importance to the local workforce. Williams criticized federal staffing mandates for nursing homes, warning they could strain rural facilities. The most contentious topic of the week was House Study Bill 37 (HSB37), which would require immigration status to be displayed on state-issued IDs. Supporters argue it further strengthens election security, while opponents fear discrimination. Williams helped move the bill through a House Judiciary subcommittee, saying, “I fully support HSB37 and believe it is one more measure to safeguard election integrity. We’ve made a number of changes to election law over the past half dozen years or so. The sky still hasn’t fallen as turnout continues to break records.” Williams encourages constituents to reach out with ideas or input about pending legislation.
