Sen. Grassley Reintroduces Legislation To Keep AM Radio In New Production Vehicles

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) has joined Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) to reintroduce the bipartisan AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act, which would require automakers to include AM radio in new vehicles at no additional cost. Grassley says, “AM radio is the backbone of our emergency alert system, especially for tens of millions of Americans in rural areas. It’s been a part of our daily commutes and road trips for decades. Iowans rely on AM radio to catch up on local news, weather, and commodity and livestock markets, as well as to hear competing viewpoints about the important issues of the day. The AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act will protect this critical resource, and I urge my colleagues to support this legislation.” The bill directs the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to ensure AM radio remains accessible in new production vehicles. The legislation has broad bipartisan support with over 40 co-sponsors, including Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa). Proponents argue that AM radio remains vital for news, emergency alerts, and diverse viewpoints, especially in rural communities. The proposed 12-page bill is included below.
