AG Bird Warns Of Rising Jury Duty Scams In Iowa

Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird is warning Iowans about a rise in jury duty scam reports. The scam involves a caller falsely claiming the potential victim missed jury duty and faces arrest or heavy fines unless they send money. In a recent case, a central Iowa woman received a voicemail about a supposed civil case. When she returned the call, her caller ID showed the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, though the number was spoofed. The scammer used outdated personal details and pressured her for payment. Growing suspicious, she checked the official sheriff’s office number and realized it didn’t match. When the scammer called back, she confronted him. He threatened detention and demanded money before she hung up and reported the scam. Bird emphasized that law enforcement never calls demanding money and urged Iowans to verify suspicious calls before acting.
