A Carroll man was injured Wednesday in Pocahontas County after the semi-tractor trailer he was driving was struck by a train. According to the Iowa State Patrol, the accident occurred at approximately 9:54 a.m. on 120th Avenue west of Fonda. Authorities say 31-year-old Zachary Jansa of Carroll was traveling northbound in a 2023 Mack truck and failed to notice the eastbound train traveling on the tracks. The train struck the semi on the driver’s side near the coupling, separating the trailer. The truck came to rest on its side in a field north of the tracks, while the trailer ended up on the south side of the tracks. Jansa was transported by emergency medical services to Buena Vista County Hospital for treatment and was released after several hours. Damage to the semi was severe, and both the truck and trailer were totaled. Jansa was cited for failure to stop at a railroad crossing properly.
