With six weeks of the legislative session complete, Rep. Craig Williams (R-Manning) updated constituents on key issues in his weekly newsletter, including education, public safety, and civil rights legislation. Williams met with students and administrators during Community College Day on the Hill, emphasizing their role in workforce development. The Education Committee advanced HSB158, a bill restricting minors from attending drag shows. Williams supports refining its language but insists it aims to prevent minors from exposure to adult content. In transportation, the House approved HF202, which would allow minors with restricted licenses to drive to church with parental consent. Williams said the measure ensures young people can attend religious services independently. Williams also participated in a presentation on hemp regulation, reaffirming his stance against modifying existing restrictions on high-THC products. Additionally, he is reviewing House Study Bill 187, which would mandate cooperation between Iowa law enforcement and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Williams acknowledged the growing debate over potential changes to Iowa’s Civil Rights Code, specifically removing gender identity as a protected class. He expects intense discussions and protests at the Capitol in the coming weeks. Williams also appeared during Saturday’s Carroll Chamber of Commerce and Carroll County Growth Partnership (CCGP). Carroll Broadcasting will have more from that program in upcoming newscasts.
