A Carroll man was taken into custody yesterday (Tuesday) after crashing his car into a local liquor store. According to the Carroll Police Department, officers were dispatched to Beer Thirty in the 400 block of E. Highway 30 at approximately 9:12 p.m. on a report that a vehicle had crashed into the building. Upon arrival, officers identified 35-year-old Jeffrey Franklin Johnson II as the driver and began a drunk driving investigation. Authorities say Johnson recorded a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .201 percent, more than 2.5 times the legal limit, and he was transported to the Carroll County jail for first offense operating while intoxicated, a serious misdemeanor. Further investigation revealed Johnson had assaulted a family member earlier in the day by choking them nearly to the point of unconsciousness, leading to an additional charge of domestic abuse assault—impeding airflow, an aggravated misdemeanor. Johnson was released from custody after appearing before a magistrate and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on March 13 at the Carroll County Courthouse.
