U.S Senator Chuck Grassley is applauding the Department of Justice for initiating an investigation into major egg producers for the continuing climb of prices across the country. The Antitrust Division of the DOJ is currently running the investigation, looking to see if information is being shared amongst suppliers, causing the rise in prices. Grassley says in the free market, supply and demand is the driver of the economy, and discussion of pricing and supply between producers for financial gain in illegal.
Grassley says he is not sure when the market will stabilize and prices will average out again, as it all depends on producers to repopulate flocks.
The highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is also complicating things, which Grassley says impacts the supply of eggs.
Grassley says the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) investments of one billion dollars to combat HPAI is a start, but much more work will need to be done. Grassley made his comments during his weekly Capitol Hill report with reporters.
