Fire departments in the listening area are encouraging residents to avoid any forms of open burning as dry conditions, warm temperatures, and potentially high winds lead to high fire risks today (Monday). A Red Flag Warning is in effect for most of Iowa on Monday, including all seven counties in the Carroll Broadcasting listening area. According to the National Weather Services (NWS), a Red Flag Warning is issued when any fires that start could spread rapidly out of control. Formal burn bans are active in Audubon and Guthrie counties, but the lack of a burn ban does not necessarily mean there is no risk. With relative humidity in the teens and winds out of the southwest up to 40 mph, a small fire sparked by heavy equipment or a discarded cigarette poses more of a threat than usual. The Red Flag Warning for Monday begins at 11 a.m. and ends at 8 p.m.
