Daryl Toyne, 95, passed away Saturday morning, February 22, at Accura HealthCare of Lake City, Iowa. Daryl Don Toyne was born November 14, 1929, to parents Victor and Florence (Riedesel) Toyne of rural Greene County, Iowa. After graduating from Lohrville High School in 1947, he spent time working at the Whiteman Elevator before transitioning to full-time farming. On October 31, 1953, in an at-home ceremony, he married Barbara Ann Brownell, a partnership that celebrated almost seventy years of marriage before her passing on March 10, 2023.
He was a member of the Lake City First Baptist Church, having served numerous times as a deacon, and was affiliated with the Lanesboro United Methodist Church later in life. Among other multiple community activities, Daryl was a member of the Farm Bureau, the Carroll County Cattleman’s Association, and Haggai Masonic Lodge. He served for many years as a board member of the West Central Cooperative, Stewart Memorial Community Hospital, and Trinity Regional Medical Center. He and Barb also relished playing in pinochle clubs with their many good friends.
In addition to farming, Daryl sold seed corn for several decades, representing different companies from PAG to Pioneer Seeds. He enjoyed treating valued customers to plot day treats and uniquely themed annual parties.
Daryl loved the outdoors. He fished and trapped as a youth and continued to enjoy fishing when possible, from baiting hooks dangling from bamboo poles for his young daughters on the Raccoon River to traveling to Canada for fishing trips with treasured friends.
Farming was as much a passion as an occupation for Daryl. He took pleasure in a clean field of soybeans as well as improving the genetics of his hog and cattle herds and found simple pleasure in watching his cows contentedly graze while their calves romped at their sides. In addition to raising his own cattle, Daryl enjoyed traveling to South Dakota for feeder cattle sales, stopping at quilt shops for his wife Barb along the way.
An avid sports fan, he and Barb had season tickets to watch ISU football at Clyde Williams Field and for several additional years, at the new stadium after the Cyclones moved there in 1975. He attended local sporting events long before he sat in the bleachers to watch his daughters and grandchildren’s games. Even when no longer able to attend, he enjoyed hearing of his great-grandchildren’s activities. Always ready to visit, or share lemon ice cream from the Dairy Mart, Daryl will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Alyson (Rich) Schroeder of Churdan, IA, Chris (Dave) Happe of Ames, IA, and Jocelyn (Kevin) Ord of Farmington, MO; grandchildren: Kimberly (Jerry) Manint of Bel Air, MD, Nathan (Crystal) Schroeder of Gretna, NE, Ben (Bailey) Schroeder of Glidden, IA, Jeff Happe of Ames, Holly (Eric) Grootveld of Bellevue, ID, Kelsey (Micah) Greene of Des Moines, IA, Audra (Nate) Kingery of Ste. Genevieve, MO, Genna (Anthony) Souffle of Minneapolis, MN and Moriah (Kyle) Hix of Rolla, MO; great-grandchildren: Justin, Ethan, and Ella Happe, Bridger, Tinley, Sawyer, Katrien, Colter and Gideon Grootveld, Adalia Greene, Kara and Khloe Schroeder, Brody, Kayson and Avery Schroeder, Judah, Elijah and Amelia Kingery, and Elaine Hix.
He was preceded in death by his wife Barb, his parents, and brother, Merritt.
The Visitation will be from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., Friday, April 4, 2025, at the Lampe & Powers Funeral Home in Lake City, Iowa. The Memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 5, 2025, at the United Methodist Church in Lanesboro, followed by a graveside service at the Lanesboro cemetery.
