The Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Board of Education heard from two district stakeholders regarding concerns over the of resignation of an administrative staff and declining enrollment due to students attending other schools. The first to speak was Sondra Rierson, who said she was shocked to hear the resignation of CCSD High School Principal, Kourtney Abbotts.
Audio PlayerWhen Rierson found out it wasn’t due to parent or student backlash causing the resignation, she watched the video of the January board meeting where she said she was extremely disappointed by how Abbotts was treated. Rierson claimed she witnessed a school board member addressed Abbotts with confrontational questions, while other board members and administrators sat in silence.
Audio PlayerThe second individual to address the board was CHS Math Teacher, Amy Brown. Brown has worked for the district for many years and says she is concerned over the declining enrollment as students opt to open enroll in other districts.
Audio PlayerBrown says on average 114 students leave the district to open enroll elsewhere annually, with around 112 students open enrolling into CCSD. She says administration and the board should take a look at the Carroll Middle School (CMS) after recent changes have changed the overall environment for staff and students.
Audio PlayerWhile board members and administration were unable to respond to topics discussed during the public forum, members thanked Rierson and Brown for coming in and bringing the concerns to their attention.
