The Carroll City Council is updating plans for the 12th Street reconstruction project to allow on-street parking, changing course from last month’s decision. According to Public Works Director Randy Krauel, the council needed to decide on street width and sidewalk work at the Feb. 10 meeting to keep the project on schedule, but the council was hesitant to select an option that would maintain on-street parking without knowing the cost of ADA-complaint sidewalk updates.
The initial cost estimates for Option 3, which maintains on-street parking, would have added close to $130,000 to the project’s price tag. City staff’s additional review found that much of the existing sidewalk is compliant, so they can bring the cost down by only addressing the problem areas.
Several 12th Street residents also approached the council at the Feb. 24 meeting to request that the council consider keeping the on-street parking. There was some discussion among the council members at this past Monday’s meeting as to which side of the street parking will be allowed, but Kooiker says that is an issue that can be decided later after consulting with the police department and residents from the project area.
The council approved a motion from Ward 2 Councilman Jason Atherton to update the 12th Street reconstruction plans to include on-street parking at an additional cost of $90,000 on a 6-0 vote. Bid-letting is slated for December 2025, with construction tentatively scheduled for 2026.
