The Carroll County Board of Supervisors will decide on Monday how they want to proceed with filling the vacancy left by the unexpected passing of Carroll County Attorney John Werden earlier this month. The board has two options. They can appoint somebody to the office to fill out the remainder of Werden’s term, which expires at the end of 2026, or they can host a special election. Curt Steger, Werden’s assistant county attorney for more than a decade, has been appointed as the interim county attorney to serve in the role until a formal replacement is selected. If the supervisors were to appoint somebody, it is almost certain Steger would be their selection. The board has indicated Steger is interested in the position. However, if the board chooses to host a special election, it will give the public a voice in the county’s chief prosecutor, but that would come at a cost to taxpayers, as hosting a special election generally costs the county over $10,000. Other items on Monday’s agenda include a public hearing and acceptance for a proposed hog confinement expansion in Washington Township, consideration of a Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 union agreement with the Carroll County Paramedics Association, and setting a hearing date for a half-dozen parcels to be rezoning following the end of the City of Carroll and Carroll County’s zoning agreement. The meeting on Monday, March 31, begins at 9 a.m. at the Carroll County Courthouse. The meeting is open to the public and will be live-streamed via the county’s YouTube channel.
