Saturday Protest In Carroll Draws ~90 People Concerned About Nation’s Direction

Around 90 people gathered Saturday morning and marched along U.S. Highway 30 in Carroll as part of a general protest about the condition of the country. Russ Steinkamp, one of the organizers behind the event, says he was pleased with the turnout.

Participants gathered at the Carroll Public Library and set out at noon, traveling north along Court Street, west along the Highway, and then held their signs in the lot west of the Westgate Mall, with phrases such as “This is not normal,” “Hands off our Social Security,” and “Tax the rich,” for passersby. One woman was carrying a Mexican flag. The protest had no central theme, and each person had their own reasons for coming. Rich Stoffers, a retired educator, says his worries over school funding brought him to Saturday’s event.

Pat Vogl of Arcadia, a retired federal worker, says she is concerned about reductions in the federal workforce.

Linda Luhring, a retired social worker from Lake City, says cuts to the support systems for people most in need led her to join Saturday’s protest.

The protestors received scattered honks of support and a few jeers from motorists, but most passed by without acknowledging them. Photos from Saturday’s event are included below.
