Over the past week, property owners in Carroll County have been receiving their updated assessments, with most residential properties seeing increases of around 20 percent. Carroll County Assessor Sarah Haberl says many residents are reaching out to her office trying to understand why their home’s assessed value jumped by $20,000-$30,000 in such a short timeframe.
As the average price for home sales rises, that drives up the price of other homes that may not have been on the market for years. Haberl says this trend is being seen statewide.
Haberl adds commercial and agricultural properties also recorded substantial increases.
Haberl adds that there is a process for people to challenge their assessments if they think there has been a mistake, but such efforts often yield little.
Carroll County’s property values total $3.424 billion before any adjustments and appeals. Of that figure, 53.43 percent are residential properties, 27.98 percent are agricultural land, and 18.59 percent are commercial/industrial properties. These valuations will be used to calculate taxes due in September 2026 and March 2027.
