Born on January 25, 1943, in Bayard, Iowa, Dick was the son of Leonard and Beatrice (Sievers) Knudsen. He grew up in Guthrie County, Iowa his whole life and received his education in Coon Rapids. From a young age, he developed a strong work ethic and deep appreciation for the land and community that would shape his life as a generational farmer.
Dick proudly served six years in the Iowa National Guard, demonstrating his commitment to service and country. Dick celebrated earning his veteran status this year. Following his time in the Guard, he embarked on a career that reflected both his industrious spirit and love for rural life. He worked for the Garst Company and spent many years driving truck—roles that allowed him to connect with people across the region. In addition to his professional endeavors, Dick remained deeply rooted in agriculture through his work on his family’s Century Farm.
On December 16, 1967, Dick married Betty Jean Lucht. Their union marked the beginning of a devoted partnership filled with love and shared experiences. Together they raised four children: Michelle, Andrew (Drew), Lynn, and (Rodney) Rod.
Dick was known by many as “Good Ole’ Dick, Runnin’ Bull or Smiley” nicknames that captured his warm personality and easygoing nature. He had a kind heart, a generous spirit, and a sense of humor that brought joy to those around him. Whether casting a line at his favorite fishing spot or heading out into the woods for hunting season, Dick found peace and pleasure in the outdoors. He also enjoyed playing cards, especially cribbage and cherished time spent with family and friends, often filled with laughter and storytelling.
A man of faith, Dick was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Coon Rapids. His presence there was marked by quiet devotion and fellowship with others who shared his beliefs.
Dick’s memory will be lovingly held by his wife Betty; daughter Michelle (significant other, Lance) of Canton, SD; sons Drew (Jessica) of Corpus Christi, TX, Lynn (Rose) of Coon Rapids, IA, and Rod (significant other, Samantha); grandchildren Kela, Taira, Shawn, Schyler, Cali & Raelyn, 14 great grandkids, nieces, nephews, cousins, as well as all those who were fortunate enough to know him. He was preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Beatrice; sister Carol; and brother Kenneth; granddaughter Amber & grandson Sterling.
May the memory of Good Ole’ Dick bring comfort to all who knew him and serve as a lasting reminder of a life well lived.
