The City of Kimballton is advising residents of a potential water health advisory to infants due to the high level of manganese. In a sample that was collected Thursday, manganese levels for Kimballton’s water supply was at 1.0 mg/L, which is higher than Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) short term health advisory level of .3 mg/L geared for young babies. At this time, until further notice, tap water should not be used to prepare formula or food for infants under six months old. Residents should not boil the water, as it can increase the levels of manganese because it does not evaporate along with the water. Adults and children over six months are able to consume tap water as normal with no risks to health. Those with additional questions are asked to contact Kimballton Utilities at 712-773-3451.
