Carroll Man Charged With Leaving The Scene Of Fatal Accident Near Halbur

A Carroll man has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident in connection to a fatal crash Monday evening near Halbur that killed two people and left another in critical condition. According to the Iowa State Patrol, the accident occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of 220th Street and Hawthorne Avenue. Authorities say 51-year-old Troy Bluml of Carroll was traveling eastbound on 220th in a John Deere tractor and failed to stop at the posted stop sign. The Bluml tractor entered the intersection and collided with the driver’s side of a northbound 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe, operated by 17-year-old Elvin Ariel Murillo Castro of Carroll. Castro and one of his passengers, 56-year-old Pedro Castro of Carroll, died at the scene due to the extent of their injuries. A second passenger, 24-year-old Carlos Castro, was airlifted from the scene to Unity Point Hospital in Des Moines for treatment of life-threatening injuries. According to law enforcement, Bluml had left the scene following the crash. Authorities later located Bluml and his tractor at his residence and took him into custody. He was booked into the Carroll County Jail early Tuesday morning on a charge of leaving the scene of a fatal accident, a class C felony. The charge carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison and $10,000 in fines.
