Mexican Man Residing In Buena Vista County Sentenced To 20 Months for Illegal Reentry

A Mexican national living in Buena Vista County, who had previously been deported from the United States, has been sentenced to 20 months in federal prison for illegally reentering the country. According to court records from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa, 39-year-old Rafael Martinez De Escobar-Hernandez pled guilty in December to one count of illegal reentry and was sentenced on Wednesday. Authorities say Martinez De Escobar-Hernandez was deported from the United States in 2019 following a conviction in Texas. Despite the removal, he reentered the country from Guatemala. On Feb. 2, 2024, he was arrested in Buena Vista County for a controlled substance violation after being found with distribution quantities of cocaine. He was later convicted of possession with intent to deliver and placed on probation. An investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement revealed he had been removed from the country three times prior. Martinez De Escobar-Hernandez will serve a three-year supervised release after his prison term. He remains in U.S. Marshal custody pending transfer to a federal facility.
