Bishop Nickless Issues Statement Following Death Of Pope Francis

Bishop Walker Nickless of the Diocese of Sioux City released a statement this (Monday) morning following the death of Pope Francis, who served as leader of the Roman Catholic Church for more than 12 years. Nickless says, “I ask the faithful to join me in offering our prayers to God the Father for the repose of the soul of his servant, Francis. We trust in the Lord, who promises the resurrection of the body for his faithful. Having just celebrated the Resurrection of the Lord, we pray that His Holiness may soon enjoy the fullness of peace and joy.” Bishop Nickless recalled meeting the pope during a 2020 ad limina visit to the Vatican, calling Pope Francis “warm and welcoming” and “an attentive listener” who offered encouragement to bishops navigating shared challenges. The 88-year-old pontiff was raised in Buenos Aires, ordained in 1969, and was named Bishop of Buenos Aires in 1992. Pope John Paul II raised him to the office of cardinal in 2001, and he was elected to the papacy by his fellow cardinals in 2013 following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI.
