CCSD Finalizes Return-To-Learn Plan Without Required Face Coverings

Follow-up story with audio can be found HERE

The Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Board of Education voted 3-2 during a special meeting Wednesday night to finalize their plan for a return to in-person education five days per week that strongly recommends face coverings for students and teachers. Under the approved plan, masks are “strongly recommended,” particularly on buses and during passing periods. School officials initially came forward with a plan that required face coverings throughout the day but changed the language after hearing from numerous stakeholders who wanted to have the choice for their children. According to Transportation Director, Jeff Cullen, busing continues to be a substantial challenge. As it stands, buses will be limited to two students per seat with transportation offered to kindergarten through eighth-grade families who live more than two miles away from their attendance center and three miles away for high school students. Outside guests to the district’s attendance centers will be limited, and custodial staff will be continuously cleaning and sanitizing high-traffic and high-touch areas in the buildings. A remote learning option is also being offered to students and families who may not feel comfortable with in-person education. However, those who chose this option will be required to remain online through the end of the fall semester. The board indicated there is no set timeline for how long these plans will be in place, and school officials will be monitoring the COVID-19 situation continuously. Superintendent, Dr. Casey Berlau, says it is possible these requirements may be adjusts as circumstances change. Carroll Broadcasting will bring you more from Wednesday’s meeting in upcoming newscasts.

Editor’s note: Story has been updated to clarify use of face coverings during passing periods and on buses.
