Lake City – Red Richardson, 94, died Wednesday, August 26, 2020 at his home. A private family funeral service will be held. Condolences may be sent to 305 N. Hughitt, Lake City, Iowa 51449 for donation to Unity Point Hospice. The Lampe Funeral Home of Lake City is in charge of the arrangements.
Melvin LeRoy “Red” Richardson was born on August 5, 1926 in Owanka, South Dakota to Clifford and Mildred (Wessel) Richardson. After his father died in 1928, the family moved to Iowa. Red attended country school in Lohrville through eighth grade, then graduated from Viola Center Consolidated School in 1944. After completing a six month course at AIB in Des Moines, Red entered the Navy in late 1944. He spent two years serving at Great Lakes, Illinois, Norfolk, Virginia and Miami, Florida. After his discharge Red worked for Lake City Woodworks, then Grant and Obye, Desoto Plymouth Dealer in Rockwell City. On July 2, 1949, Red married Joan Subbert in Jackson, Minnesota. The couple moved to Lake City in 1954 and Red went to work as office manager for Miller Motor Co. for 18 years. In 1972, he worked as office manager for Macke Motors in Lake City then to Carroll at Koberg Chevrolet, Mark Beardmore Chevrolet and Walsh Chevrolet where he worked until his retirement in 2008.
Red enjoyed country music, country star shows, Branson, Missouri and country dancing. He was country when country wasn’t cool.
Red is survived by his wife Jo of Lake City; sons Rick (LaVonne) of Zapata, Texas and Marty (Lori) of Sibley, Iowa; daughter Sandy (Craig) Rock of Lake City; grandchildren Tiffany, Zach, Roxanne and Sydney; step-grandchild Joseph; great-grandchildren Claire, Adalyn, Brylee, Cortnee, Ryder; step-great-grandchildren Austin, Addie, Holden, Jett and Tenley; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; half-brother Alden Seymour; brothers Russell, John, Clyde and Floyd; sisters-in-law Bonnie and Darlene; step-grandchildren Jesse and Jeffrey; and great-grandson Tucker.
