Authorities in Sac and Calhoun Counties are reporting an increase in the number of attempted phone scams being called in by residents. According to the Sac County Sheriff’s Office, they have heard from multiple individuals who have been targets of the common Social Security scam. Callers will falsely claim there is an issue with your Social Security number and request you verify the information. They will use vague threats, such as a pending arrest, to pressure the victim into complying. In Calhoun County, law enforcement says scammers are spoofing the Sheriff’s Office phone number in an attempt to coerce them into providing payment. Both agencies encourage residents to be suspicious of unsolicited calls requesting personal information or payment, especially through unusual means like prepaid debit cards and gift cards. If you receive such a call, immediately hang up the phone and contact your local law enforcement.
