Area residents continue to receive scam calls, with two being reported just minutes apart on Friday, Feb. 19 to the Jefferson Police Department. At approximately 4:25 that afternoon, they received their first report in which the caller was notified they had won a prize, but would have to provide their bank information to collect. The second report came in at approximately 4:57 p.m. with this scammer posing as an IRS worker. The caller said they owed taxes to the government and an attempt to collect was made. In both instances, the residents receiving the calls did exactly what authorities advise in these situations; if you question the call, hang up and try to make direct contact with the organization the scam caller said they were representing. Never provide them with banking or personal information as the IRS will not make a notification such as this by phone, and legitimate prize winnings will not require sharing this type of information.
