Scammers Find New Way To Try To Benefit From Holiday Generosity

Area residents are working hard to help out their fellow man this holiday season and warning of a new scam circulating in our region. In this new version of an old ruse, scammers are texting cell phones and pretending to be local clergy members. They are asking for help and directing people to make donations of iTunes cards that will be given to patients battling cancer. Some of the individuals receiving these messages reached out to the local churches and have found the information is not at all factual. If you receive a text of this nature, do not comply with the request. You can contact the church named directly and then local law enforcement or notify the Iowa Attorney General’s Office Consumer Protection Division at 888-777-4590.
