Kuemper fought hard against the Class 1A 7th ranked Spartans and showed there is no quit in this group of young ladies. The Knights trailed 11-4 midway through the 1st quarter but answered that with a 12-0 run to go up 16-11. The Spartans responded and tied the game at 16 at the end of the 1st quarter. After a Kuemper 3 to start the 2nd quarter Exira-EHK took control with a 16-0 run to lead 32-19. The game was delayed for a while in the 2nd quarter with the Spartans up 29-19 as an official had a medical situation. The Spartans led 40-26 at half and built it to 51-29 early in the 3rd.
Kuemper had no quit and quickly answered with a pair of 3’s from Brooklyn Gifford and buckets by Karly Baumhover and Frannie Glynn. The Knights forced the Spartans to take a timeout as the lead shrunk to 56-43. Kuemper kept pace the rest of the game and had the lead down to 60-50 but there wasn’t enough time to finish the comeback.
Kuemper was out shot at the free throw line 13-17 to no attempts for Kuemper but the Knights made up the difference with 9-3’s with five coming from Gifford. The loss drops Kuemper to 1-6 overall but again showed they can play with some of the top teams in the area.
Brooklyn Gifford had a career high with 25 points and 5 rebounds while Akuet Malek finished with 10 poitns and 10 rebounds. Catherine Mayhall added 8 assists and did a nice job of getting into the lane and kicking to the shooters on the outside. Karly Bauhmover added 8 points with a pair of 3’s.
The Knights travel to St Albert on Tuesday on 1380 AM/95.1 FM KCIM.
