Icy roads Sunday morning led to a two-vehicle accident on Interstate 80 that left both vehicles disabled. At approximately 9:23 a.m., the Guthrie and Adair County Sheriff’s Offices and Iowa State Patrol were dispatched to the scene near the Casey exit. According to law enforcement, 68-year-old Rodney Samuel Deaton of Panama City Beach, Fla. was traveling eastbound in a 2014 Jeep Cherokee when he encountered an icy patch and lost control. A 2019 Toyota Highlander, driven by Douglas Mitchell Sawyer of Albion, Ind., was following behind and was unable to stop in time due to the ice on the roadway, rear-ending the Jeep. Deaton complained of possible injuries but was not transported for treatment. The Deaton vehicle sustained disabling damage estimated at $18,000. The Saywer Toyota was totaled with an estimated $20,000 in damage.
