Sac County Conservation’s Naturalist, Kristen Bieret, began in her new position a little over six months ago, in the midst of a pandemic that asked people to stay home and away from others. Even though the standard safety protocols are somewhat contrary to programming and events typically organized by the naturalist, Bieret began finding ways to engage with people of all ages and partner with other organizations, bringing them back out into nature and together in creative ways to share that passion. Bieret says they have actually seen an increase in activity and interest in their many programs during the pandemic.
An annual event that is typically hosted this time of year by Sac County Conservation, Steph Erpelding, the County Youth Coordinator at Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Black Hawk Lake Fisheries Biologist, Ben Wallace, and Fisheries Technician Matt Mork, had to be moved to a virtual platform this year.
Bieret says these videos are great for adults and kids alike, really anyone that is interested in learning more about ice fishing. She says they have also planned a special outing for those wanting to spend a romantic night outside on Feb. 14.
That $20 fee for the use of a fire pit also includes the supplies to make s’mores. And in a local partnership with all Sac County libraries, Bieret says she will be distributing story kits in the coming week.
