Lake View Municipal Electric is asking customers to reduce power and natural gas usage in an effort to mitigate the risk of potential power outages because of the extreme cold weather and increased demand. Specifically, they are asking customers to lower their thermostats by at least three degrees, unplug unnecessary appliances, close fireplace dampers and refrain from using large appliances as much as possible. The community’s wholesale supplier is Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska (MEAN), which is a member of the Southwest Power Poll (SPP). The SPP oversees the power grid of an area from Oklahoma to the Canadian border. They have declared Energy Emergency Alerts (EEA) that will remain in effect until further notice. Due to widespread and extreme cold, worsening conditions are creating energy deficiencies in the region and may lead to controlled service interruptions, such as the rolling blackouts currently being conducted by Raccoon Valley Electric Cooperative (RVEC).
