Carroll Supervisors Open Initial Dialog With Department Heads On Future Use Of Courthouse Jail Space

The Carroll County Board of Supervisors are asking for input from department heads; getting their thoughts on use of the space that will be vacated on the lower level of the Carroll County Courthouse once the new jail is fully functional. Carey Kersey, Director of Environmental and Passport Services, has an office in the basement. She says there are layout issues when it comes to moving up a level.

She adds, however, that something needs to be done about reception issues with newer technology in the basement. Other departments at that level, IT and the City/County Communication Center, agree. There was discussion about one area that will be costly to renovate, the current jail. Supervisor Chair, Gene Meiners, suggested storage. Questions were raised about the amount of unused space. Meiners says the area to the west is newer and the jail space to the east has garage access. Auditor, Kourtney Irlbeck, made a maintenance suggestion.

Irlbeck says she would be willing to move her office downstairs.

Treasurer, Lisa Wagner, is open to ideas of moving to the Auditor’s space and utilizing the current boardroom to help with the added needs for Department of Transportation (DOT) tasks. However, her answer would depend on viable options presented. Communications Supervisor and 911 Coordinator, Jason Hoffman, says he has been considering an idea for quite some time.

He also suggests the possibility of utilizing some secured areas for communications and IT. In the end, the supervisors have asked that the department heads continue to communicate their ideas for consideration as they try to determine the best and most cost-effective use of the space available. Meiners is also asking for a set of blueprints to get exact square footage numbers. The topic will be brought back at future meetings.
