CCSD Board Of Education Shifts Final Day Of 2020-21 School Year To May 28

The Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Board of Education approved a calendar adjustment at their meeting Monday night to shift the final day of classes to Friday, May 28. According to Superintendent, Dr. Casey Berlau, students have missed an entire week of school so far due to inclement weather, including Monday. Iowa code requires a minimum of 1,080 instructional hours, and Berlau says they are well positioned to meet that, despite the snow days.

The last day of instruction was originally scheduled for Tuesday, May 25. Berlau recommended to the board they extend the year through the end of that week.

Berlau adds instructors would return after Memorial Day weekend on June 1, 2 and 3 to fulfil their contractual obligations. He explains the reasoning behind his recommendation.

While the chance for additional snow days is slim, the district is prepared to shift learning online if inclement weather does occur. However, it does require some forewarning for remote instruction to be effective, and Berlau notes surprise ice or snow events may still result in a regular snow day. The board voted unanimously to approve Berlau’s recommendations.
