The Jefferson Police Department has issued arrest warrants for two women accused of writing over $1,800-worth of bad checks. The first warrant requested was for 39-year-old Sarah Johanna McBurney of Fort Dodge for third-degree theft, an aggravated misdemeanor. Authorities say McBurney wrote at least five checks in March to the Jefferson Hy-Vee totaling $1,024. The other warrant is for 81-year-old Hattie Sue Ball of Boone, also for third-degree theft. In February, Ball wrote a check for $830 from an account that had been closed prior to the incident.
