Area Softball Teams go 1-5 Thursday Night with Kuemper Grabbing 11-2 Win Over Denison-Schleswig

Kuemper picked up a great conference win over Denison-Schleswig Thursday night. The Knights in the top of the first strung together hit after hit as Hailey Ostrander and Jordan Schwabe were brought home by Brianna Lux and Kenzie Schon, leading 2-0. Bases were loaded for Kuemper, but Kaci Peter and Chloe Venteicher were unable to get base hits to score more runners. Kuemper extended their lead in the top of the second where Kyndal Hilgenburg got home thanks to a Jordan Schwabe RBI single.

Denison-Schleswig responded to Keumper’s three runs with an RBI home run, cutting down the Knights lead to 3-2. Kuemper and Denison Schleswig didn’t add any runs in the third inning, but in the fourth, Kuemper was unstoppable. Six Kuemper batters scored in the top of the fourth inning. Lux and Peter each got an RBI double in this half inning that continued to motivate the Knights. Keumper led 9-2 after the fourth. Lux added two more runs in the top of the fifth thanks to a home run that cleared the center field fence. 

Venteicher pitched the first three innings for Kuemper, where she allowed two earned runs, four hits, and struck out three batters. Kamryn Venner took over pitching duties in the fourth inning and was dominant. Venner in four innings pitched allowed a single hit and struck out nine batters. Adding the Lux homerun in the fifth, Kuemper led 11-2 from that point on and closed out the game thanks to Venner who threw her ninth strike of the game to win it for Kuemper. 

Kuemper improves to 6-4 on the season and 1-1 in Hawkeye 10 Conference play as Denison Schleswig falls to 9-4 on the season and 5-2 in conference play. Kuemper is in action next when they host Creston for a varsity doubleheader on Monday, June 14th.

Ballard at Carroll

Carroll had a difficult night and were unable to string together hits as they faced off against Ballard Thursday night. In the first two innings, Ballard got out to a 2-0 lead while Carroll struggled to find ways to score. Brielle Hinners and Shay Sinnard grabbed base hits for Carroll, with Hinners getting a double, but were unable to score. Alyssa Brant for the Tigers on the mound went four and two thirds innings pitched, allowing nine hits, six earned runs, while recording two strikeouts. 

Ballard added to their lead in the top of the fourth, adding five more runs, and eventually closed out the game with four runs in the top of the fifth to win 11-0. Carroll, despite the loss, ran the bases well as Shay Sinnard got three stolen bases and Brenna Goins and Averi Burke got a stolen base each. 

Carroll falls to 8-9 on the season, 0-8 in Raccoon River play as Ballard improves to 11-5 on the season and 4-4 in Raccoon River Conference play. Carroll’s season continues as they travel to take on East Sac on Friday, June 11th.

AHSTW at Audubon

Audubon had a strong second half against AHSTW, but a difficult first inning that led to defeat Thursday night at home. AHSTW got out to a strong start in the first inning getting out 4-0 thanks to a 2 RBI single and a 2 RBI double. Audubon’s response in the top of the second inning was three big strikeouts from Alexis Obermeier to keep AHSTW at bay for the time being. Both teams went scoreless in the third inning until AHSTW broke through once again in the top of the fourth inning scoring a run on a ground ball. AHSTW added another two runs in the top of the fifth and sixth, leading 7-0. The Vikings got a double in the fifth that led to a runner scoring and Audubon had an error that caused a runner to score in the sixth. 

Audubon’s luck started to change when they got a runner home thanks to Kali Irlmeier. She got a hard ground ball past the left fielder to get Sydney Beymer home and got herself an RBI double, cutting down the AHSTW lead to 7-1. Another Viking score in the top of the seventh gave AHSTW an 8-1 lead with the final half inning coming. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Beymer hit another hard ground ball to left field to score Mattie Nielsen and Kodie Sporrer for a 2 RBI single. Hannah Thygesen then scored another run for Audubon thanks to an error caused by AHSTW, cutting the lead down to 8-4. Unfortunately, AHSTW were able to get a line out to get Irlmeier out and a strikeout to end the contest at 8-4. 

Audubon falls to 5-4 on the season, 4-4 in Western Iowa Conference play as AHSTW improves to 9-6 on the season and 7-2 in WIC play. Audubon wraps up the week with another home game on Friday, June 11th against Riverside.

Glidden Ralston at Greene County

Glidden Ralston continued to improve and gain experience as they faced off against Greene County on Thursday night. Glidden Ralston and Greene County completed the first inning without anyone scoring. The Wildcats were unable to get a string of hits going in the top of the second and were left scoreless. Greene County pushed forward with 10 runs in the bottom of the second, and eventually ended the game in the bottom of the third with two more runs, winning 12-0.

Glidden Ralston’s Vanessa Koehler was able to get a base hit and a stolen base. Summer Toms went 1-1 in her at bats and recorded a strikeout in her one and two thirds innings pitched. Addy Boell relieved Toms near the end of the second inning where she allowed three runs in her one and one third innings pitched. Glidden Ralston falls to 1-9 overall on the season as Greene County improves to 3-8 overall. 

Glidden Ralston continues their season as they entertain Coon Rapids Bayard on Friday, June 11th.

Ar-We-Va at Boyer Valley

A walkoff single was the deal breaker for Ar-We-Va as they fell late to Boyer Valley Thursday night. The Rockets and Bulldogs had an entertaining game as they were tied 2-2 after five innings of play. Kora Obrecht was able to get a runner home and Delaney Schurke was credited for an RBI. Jamie Hausman and Sara Schurke scored those runs for the Rockets. Despite the loss, Jadeyn Smith did well on the mound, allowing two hits, no earned runs, one walk, and recording four strikeouts. 

Tied at 2-2, Ar-We-Va looked to extend the game into extra innings. With a runner in scoring position, Boyer Valley was able to get a walk off single that gave the Bulldogs the 3-2 win over Ar-We-Va in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Rockets were able to out hit Boyer Valley 8-2, but got one more error than Boyer Valley did at 3-2. The Rockets fall to 3-4 on the season and 3-4 in Rolling Valley Conference play as Boyer Valley improves to 5-5 on the season and 2-3 in Rolling Valley Conference play. 

Ar-We-Va closes out the week with a home game against West Harrison on Friday, June 11th.

IKM-Manning at Underwood

IKM-Manning had difficulties as they faced off against Underwood Thursday night. Underwood got out to a quick lead in the bottom of the first as they led 5-0. IKM-Manning got on the board when Laynie Gawley stole home base and cut down the Underwood lead to 5-1. Underwood extended their lead further as they added eight runs in the bottom of the second, taking a 13-1 lead. IKM-Manning were unable to respond in the top of the third, and Underwood took home the victory 13-1 in three innings.

Jessica Christensen and Brooke Booth were both perfect in their at bats, going 2-2 and 1-1 respectively. Taylor Beckendorf was credited for the RBI when Gawley scored. Booth also pitched two innings for IKM-Manning, allowing nine hits, 10 earned runs, and striking out two batters. IKM-Manning falls to 0-9 on the season and 0-9 in Western Iowa Conference play as Underwood remains undefeated at 11-0 and 7-0 in WIC play. 

The Wolves are in action next when they travel to take on Tri-Center on Monday, June 14th.
