Major Robert “Bob” Dean Bernard, age 75, of Carroll, IA, passed away on July 4, 2021 at Mercy Hospital in Waterloo, IA.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. on Saturday, July 10, 2021 at the Peace Lutheran Church in Glidden with Rick Hamilton officiating. Casket bearers will be members of the Merle Hay Post of the American Legion. Honorary Casket Bearers will be Bob and Carol’s nephews. Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery in Glidden, IA.
Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday an hour prior to the funeral service

Bob was born on August 26, 1945 to George and Rebecca (Lotridge). He grew up in Arkansas and his family moved to various places such as Agana, Guam and Sullivans Island, South Carolina. Bob received his higher education in the military and was a part of the 101st Paratrooper Airborne Division. He was an advisor to the South Vietnamese troops and taught them how to fight. While serving his country, he received the Bronze Star medal, Purple Heart, Air Medal, Joint Services Accommodation Medal, Army Accommodation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross. Bob retired with the rank of Major after 26 years of service in the Army and completed three tours of Vietnam and one of Desert Storm. After retiring from the military he starting working for Dilley State Prison in Texas where he held an office in Inventory Control Weaponry and Ammunition. After working 10 years in the prison system, Bob moved to Carroll where he later met his future wife Carol (Lucht). While residing in Carroll, he worked for New Hope and part-time for several different businesses. Bob enjoyed theatre and broadways while being a member of the Des Moines Performing Arts and Civic Center. Bob and Carol enjoyed traveling to different theater and Broadway performances together. Bob was an avid train enthusiast and was a member of the Durham Museum. He was a very proud member of the American Legion. Bob and Carol also enjoyed traveling to Arizona every winter to visit her parents.
Bob is survived by his wife Carol; step children: Jeffrey Brant and Allison Meyer; Grandchildren: Brayton Meyer, Brianna Meyer, and Blake Meyer; Brothers: Steven (Paula) Bernard of Forrest City, AK and Tony Bernard of Brunswick, GA; Sisters Teresa (Donald) Abram of Forrest City, AK, and Georgette (Ronald) Blankenship of Forrest City, AK; mother-in-law Shirley Lucht of Glidden, IA; Brother-in-laws: Denny Lucht of Glidden, IA, David (Debra) Lucht of Minburn; Sister-in-law: Connie (Kenneth) Wiederin of Glidden, IA; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.
Preceded in death are his parents, brother Stanley Bernard, and father-in-law Harold Lucht.
