After a tough first set the young South Central Calhoun Titans showed some grit on Tuesday, hanging tough against a veteran Ridge View squad. They had chances late in sets two and three to pull out a win but came up just short of extending the match.

Ridge View used a tough serve in the 1st set that gave the Titans trouble. They were out of system as freshman setter Jayci Graeve was having to chase the ball behind the ten foot line, limiting her options to set. The Titans fell behind early 7-1 and trailed by as many as 15 late. A nice run late in the 1st set helped set the tempo for the final two sets as the Titans outscored the Raptors 7-5 to close the first set.

The Titans grabbed an early 2-1 lead in set 2 which was tight the whole way. The set was tied 13 times and had 8 lead changes. The last lead change was 21-20 when Ridge View grabbed the lead, though South Central Calhoun would cut it to 23-22. South Central Calhoun was down 3 early in the 2nd set before battling back, tying the match at 7. They took the lead at 9-8 but couldn’t extend the lead as the teams traded points. The Titans had adjusted to the Raptor serve, allowing Graeve to run some quicks with their middles Kiera Hammen and Mollie Monahan which opened things up for Riley Batta who finished with a team high 13 kills. Norah Riedesel did a nice job in the back row leading the team with 6 digs. The Titans took their largest lead at 20-17 but Ridge View responded with a 4-0 run.

The Titans never led in set 3 but showed good fight after falling behind 8-2, they tied the set at 11 and again at 21. Batta had a nice run with Graeve continuing to set her after she found her rhythm. Keira Hammen had a nice series of blocks in the middle, Brenna McAlister showed strong promise on the outside as a freshman and Mollie Monahan had a nice stretch in the middle finishing with 4 kills. Ridge View pulled out the 3rd set 25-22, using the experience of six seniors in the their rotation.

The Titans open the season 0-1 and will be back in action Saturday as they travel to the Humboldt tournament.
