The East Sac Raiders picked up a pair of wins on Thursday top open the season. They knocked off a strong Newell Fonda club, taking the 1st set 27-25, then rallying to take 3rd set after dropping the 2nd set by 13 points. After winning set 3 to go up 2-1 the Raiders held off Newell Fonda in the 4th set. The Raiders were solid at the net most of the match and finished with 34 kills and 18 blocks. MaKenna Meyer led the attack at the net with 9 kills, but the Raiders were balanced with Olivia Grote and Meredith Brown each finishing with 7 kills and Kate Vondrak adding 6 kills. Paige Wunschel and Mary Bontrager did a nice job finding their open hitters. Wunschel led the way with 9 assists while Bontrager added 6 assists. Meredith Brown had a team hit 6 digs and added 3 blocks. Olivia Grate and Kate Vondrak each had 4 blocks.
The Raiders were never in trouble against GTRA sweeping the 3 sets and barely giving up double digits in points in the last two sets. They only allowed 30 points in the 3 sets combined. Kate Vondrak led the attack at the net with 8 kills. Meredith Brown and Paige Wunschel each had 6 kills and Wunschel added 9 assists. Mary Bontrager and MaKenna Meyer both had 4 aces.
The Raiders head to the Harlan Tournament on Saturday.

Audubon looked sharp as a inexperienced Coon Rapids Bayard team struggled to stay in system and struggled with serve receive. The Wheelers led the 1st set early 6-1 but Coon Rapids Bayard settled in and fought back to take an 11-10 lead. That would be their only lead as Audubon took the lead for good at 13-12. The Crusaders hung close and had the set tied at 14 before Jaci Christensen helped the Wheelers build the lead to 21-14 with a nice service run. The Wheelers didn’t look back and took the set 25-16.
Coon Rapids Bayard looked like they were going to even the match in the 2nd set. They led most of the way after Gracy Johnson put them on a run from the service line. Brynn Bass and Breeley Clayburg got hot at the net and the Crusaders were up 9-5 before Audubon rallied to within 1 at 13-12. Lacie Davis extended the lead with a run for the Crusaders, putting them up 18-12. The Wheelers chipped away and Jaci Christensen gave them a 21-20 lead. The set bounced back and forth before Audubon grabbed the lead for good at 27-26 on a Mattie Nielsen kill. The sophomore was tough at the net using the line and keeping the Crusaders guessing by taking some shots across. Nielsen ended the match with back to back kills and Audubon led 2-0.
Set three turned the momentum as Coon Rapids Bayard pulled away late thanks to Breeley Clayburg. She gave them a 21-20 lead with a nice kill and they went on to win 25-20. The 3rd set had 11 ties and 10 lead changes. The largest lead for either team until the late Crusader run was CRB leading 14-10.
Audubon looked in good shape to end it in 4, leading the 4th set 19-16. They weren’t able to put it away as Coon Rapids Bayard kept fighting and took the lead 24-23. The Wheelers regrouped before the 5th set and came out sharp. They led 3-0 right out of the gate and never trailed leading 12-4 and going on to a 15-5 win.
Mattie Nielsen was outstanding for Audubon finishing with a team high 17 kills and 17 digs. Aleah Hermansen was strong as well with 14 assists, 12 digs, 4 kills, 4 blocks and 4 aces. Addie Hocker led the Wheelers with 16 assists. Kylee Hartl added 13 digs from her libero spot. Kali Irlmeier finished with 4 blocks.
Coon Rapids Bayard was led at the net by Brynn Bass with 9 kills and Breeley Clayburg with 8 kills. Lacie Davis came on strong during the match and finished with 15 digs and 5 aces. Gracy Johnson had a team high 10 assists and Haley Halbur finished with 8 assists and 3 big aces.
The Wheelers (1-0) will host Ar-We-Va (0-0) on Tuesday while Coon Rapids Bayard (0-1) heads to the Colfax Mingo Tournament on Saturday.
