The Wall Lake City Council is moving forward with updates to their utility ordinances to prepare for the potential of unexpected supplier price increases in the future. According to Clerk, Chris Rodman, electric rates have remained stable for more than a decade with much of the energy purchased by the municipally run utility coming from the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA). Due to circumstances outside of the city’s control, it is likely WAPA will raise rates in the near future.
It is not clear how much the increase would be if it does occur. The council has not taken formal action to change customer rates, but they will be monitoring the situation to make adjustments if necessary. On a similar note, they did approve the first reading of an ordinance to include Production Cost Adjustments (PCA) for future electricity bills. Rodman explains how PCAs are calculated.
Rodman says this action is connected to the very high utility bills seen throughout the country during February’s extended cold snap.
The first reading of the PCA ordinance was passed unanimously at the council’s Aug. 9 meeting, and the second reading was approved during last week’s proceedings.
