Newton Man Accused Of Felony Theft From Carroll Retailer Sentenced Thursday

A Newton man accused of stealing nearly $1,600-worth of goods from the Carroll Walmart more than a year ago has been sentenced to prison. According to Carroll County District Court records, the order against 40-year-old Jeffrey William Trent was handed down Thursday. Trent pled guilty to one count of second-degree theft, a class D felony, and was sentenced to up to five years in custody with credit for time already served. He was also ordered to pay full victim restitution and court-appointed attorney fees, but more than $1,100 in fines and surcharges were suspended. The charge stemmed from a Carroll Police Department investigation in April of 2020 that found Trent had loaded numerous items into duffel bags and left the store without paying. Trent was taken into custody in Jasper County while still in possession of the stolen items.
