Kuemper dropped their second straight match in Hawkeye 10 Conference play after taking the first set at home, but they dropped the next three. Kuemper never trailed in the 1st set and built a 4 point lead early at 9-5. Red Oak rallied and tied the set at 10. The set stayed close and was tied five more times before Kuemper went up 17-15. They never gave up the lead again and worked themselves back up by 4 at 23-19 before taking the 1st set by 3. Ashlyn Badding was fantastic in the 1st set setting up both her middles on slides and in the middle as Sophie Badding and Frannie Glynn both had big sets. Glynn ended the set with a kill on the slide.
The 2nd set was tight most of the way with 4 lead changes and 11 ties. The last lead change came at 15-14, Red Oak never trailed again, extending their lead to 20-16. Kuemper rallied and tied it at 22 with Ashlyn Badding serving but Red Oak scored the final 3 points to win and tie the match.
The Tigers took control of set 3 early and never trailed and were never tied. They went up 5-1 and 7-2 before Kuemper settled down and started to chip away. Sophie Badding had a big block to cut it to 11-9 and it looked like Kuemper might make a run. The Knights struggled with their serve all night and it hurt them in the 3rd set. Red Oak kept Kuemper from getting on a run and built their lead back to 15-11 and eventually led 23-17. Red Oak took the 3rd set 25-19 and headed into the 4th set with a lot of confidence.
Things didn’t go well for Kuemper after taking a 1-0 lead, Red Oak ran out to a 14-4 lead and never looked back. Kuemper pulled within 8 but were never able to get closer. The loss drops Kemper to 4-4 on the season while Red Oak improves to 4-3.
Ashlyn Badding and Kenya Prescott played well for Kuemper with Prescott finishing with 28 digs. Badding had 37 assists along with 3 aces and 14 digs and was a big part of their win in set 1. Sophie Badding had a team high 12 kills with Kenzie Schon adding 10 kills and Kamryn Venner finishing with 8 kills and 8 digs.
Kuemper travels to Clarinda on Tuesday for a triangular with Denison Schleswig.

East Sac continued their strong start to the season with an impressive sweep at Pocahontas Area. The Raiders improved to 5-4 on the season, rolling in two of the three sets. They allowed just 13 points in a 1st set win and 12 points in the final set. The Raiders continued to show improvement in their passing while dominating at the net with 30 kills and 12 blocks.
Meredith Brown had another big night for the Raiders with 7 kills and tying for the lead in blocks with 4. Kate Vondrak, a sophomore has shined all season and that didn’t change finishing with 6 kills and 4 blocks. Olivia Grote and Paige Wunschel have also been outstanding to start the season. Grote led the team with 9 kills while Wunschel added 14 assists, 4 aces and 5 kills. Mary Bontrager finished with 11 assists and 3 blocks.
The Raiders head to the Ridge View Tournament on Saturday.

South Central Calhoun pulled within a match of 500 with a pair of wins at Storm Lake St Mary’s. The Titans dominated both matches in different ways. They hit the ball well in both matches and served the ball well with the serve being the difference in the win over Storm Lake St Mary’s. South Central Calhoun finished the match with 16 aces after having 8 against GTRA.
Riley Batta and Keira Hammen controlled the net. Batta finished the night with 19 kills while Hammen added 11 kills and 11 blocks. Jayci Graeve had 37 assists between the two matches. Mollie Monahan finished with 10 kills combined. Keira Hammen and Brenna McAlister served very well against Storm Lake St Mary’s and each had 5 aces in the match. McAlister and Kylee Schleisman had 5 digs each in the Storm Lake St Mary’s match and McAlister led the back row in the matches combined with 8 digs.
The Titans host their own tournament Saturday in Rockwell City.

Glidden Ralston had their first home match on Thursday and left with a nice win. The Wildcats dominated sets 1 and 4, pulled out a comfortable win in set 2 but dropped a tight third set. They were sharp at the net and serving in the triangular last week and that continued with a balanced attack at the net. Paige Klocke, Vanessa Koehler, Lauren Hulsing and Alicen Dreesen took charge at the net. Addy Boell, Ashlynn Tigges and Hulsing all had good serving nights. Defensively the Wildcats took another step forward on understanding their zones on defense and showed good improvement. The win improves Glidden Ralston to 2-1 on the season as they don’t play again until September 14th.
Paige Klocke led the attack at the net with 10 kills with Lauren Hulsing and Vanessa Koehler each with 7 kills. Addy Boell has been terrific setting the ball and had 30 assists to go with 4 aces. Ashlynn Tigges and Lauren Hulsing each added 4 aces as the Wildcats finished with 14 aces. Tiela Janssen had a very good night in the back row with 19 digs and Summer Toms added 9 digs.

Boyer Valley at IKM-Manning

IKM-Manning improved in many areas since their match against East Sac, but they fell short against Boyer Valley Thursday.
The Wolves came out in set one with a goal to improve on serve receiving and communication, and they did just that. Both teams went back and forth taking the lead and tying up the set. In total, there were 11 ties. IKM-Manning allowed Boyer Valley to creep back every so often, with the set tied late at 23-23. The Wolves were able to close out set one and win by a close score of 25-23. IKM-Manning saw improvement in their back row, with help from Eryn Ramsey getting 11 digs on the night, and Bianca Cadwell who recorded six kills, three digs, and three aces. Boyer Valley in set two started to take over. IKM-Manning trailed 2-5 and clawed back to a 9-5 lead. After a timeout by Boyer Valley, the Bulldogs came roaring back and scored 19 unanswered points. The Bulldogs walked away with set two 25-10.
In set three, IKM-Manning got out 2-0 to start the set, and then Boyer Valley took the lead at 3-2 and didn’t give the Wolves the chance to take back the lead. The Bulldogs came out on top in the third set 25-13. Set four was going IKM-Manning’s way in the beginning. The Wolves got out to their best start all night, getting up 6-1. Boyer Valley started to chip away at the IKM-Manning lead, but the Wolves hung on to their lead for a while. Boyer Valley tied up the game three more times before leading 14-13 and leading for good after that point. Boyer Valley walked away with set four 25-15 and defeated IKM-Manning in four sets.
IKM-Manning falls to 0-2 on the season as Boyer Valley starts off their season at 1-0. The Wolves are in action next on Thursday, September 9th, as they travel to take on Missouri Valley.
