Two Area Communities Receive Grant Funding For Projects Celebrating Local Art, Culture And History

Two area communities have been selected for grant funding through the Iowa Creative Places program. The Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs announced the investment of $950,000 into six communities who have developed clear visions for the future that are making the most of authentic, local art, culture and history. The City of Lake View will receive $250,000 for the new community center that is being constructed to replace a beloved, historic ballroom that closed nearly 20 years ago. Community leaders envision a venue for social and business functions as well as a flourishing cultural hub through a partnership with the Lake View Arts Council. The second local community to receive funding is Manning. The city will use the $50,000 award to honor the community’s history and agricultural heritage by creating new sculpture and interactive art installations at Trestle Park as well as new murals throughout town. Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs Director, Chris Kramer, says the grants are just one way they incentivize communities to bring their vision to life in tangible ways that attract and retain business while promoting tourism and boosting the quality of life for residents. Other projects receiving awards include: the renovation of a 107-year-old railroad depot in Charles City; new artwork, an outdoor performance space and landmarks referencing the city’s past in the Clive Greenbelt; development of the Linn Creek District in Marshalltown that ties together sports and recreation, new housing and reinvigorated businesses; and the connection of cultural and artistic venues with added environmental education at an art station and pavilion on the West Union to Echo Valley State Park Trail in West Union.
