Sac City Library Announces Launch Of Digitized Microfilm Archive

The Sac City Public Library is excited to announced the launch of a new website meant to preserve and digitize Sac County history. The project is a joint effort between Sac County libraries to make the information stored in their microfilm archive more easily accessible. Sac City Library Director, Kim Nelsen, says these efforts were made possible through contributions from a Sac City native and the State of Iowa.

Like most physical forms of media storage, microfilm’s quality declines over time. In some cases, a single spool may be the last available primary source for the area for that time period. Nelsen says some of their newly digitized records date back to the 1870s.

She says one of the best things about the new online archive is that the information contained within can be found with a simple keyword search.

Previous editions of more than a dozen current and former Sac County news organizations, including the Sac Sun, the Odebolt Chronicle and the Wall Lake Blade, can be searched using the Community History Archive. The goal is for other area communities to join in the effort and expand the digitized collection. Check it out yourself by following the link included below.
